SaaS Affiliate Program Terms 2026: What Partners Accept

Key findingsAcross 238 SaaS affiliate programs read on official pages, 38% restrict paid ads, mostly bidding on the brand name, and 24% ban self-referrals. The median payout minimum is $50, $100 is the most common, published hold periods have a median of 45 days, and PayPal is offered by 86% of programs that name a method.

Commission rates get all the attention, but an affiliate's real deal is written in the rules around them: which traffic is allowed, who gets accepted, when a commission becomes payable and when it disappears. This report looks at those terms for 238 SaaS affiliate programs at 234 vendors, as published on their own program pages, terms and help centers.

The data comes from the Scoutner SaaS partner program directory, the same source as our SaaS Partner Program Benchmarks 2026. Each vendor page lists its sources and the date they were checked. Fourteen of the terms quoted below were re-read on the vendors' pages on October 21, 2026. The dataset is free to reuse under CC BY 4.0.

Key takeaways
  • 91 of 238 SaaS affiliate programs (38%) restrict paid ads: 53 ban bidding on the brand name, 20 limit all paid search and 18 ban every paid channel.
  • 58 programs ban self-referrals, 41 review every application and 39 refuse coupon, deal or cashback sites.
  • The median payout minimum is $50 across 97 programs that publish one; $100 is the most common value (34 programs).
  • The median published hold before a commission can be paid is 45 days (56 programs); 9 programs wait more than 60 days.
  • PayPal is offered by 114 of the 133 programs that name a payout method (86%).

What do SaaS affiliate programs forbid most often?

Restricting paid ads is the most common rule: 91 of 238 programs (38%) publish one. Next come bans on self-referrals (58 programs), application review (41), bans on coupon, deal and cashback sites (39) and rules against spam (32). 43 programs, 18% of the sample, list no rule at all on their program page.

Rules published by 238 SaaS affiliate programs: paid ads restricted 91, self-referrals banned 58, application reviewed 41, coupon or cashback sites banned 39, spam rule 32, disclosure required 24, new customers only 19, cookie stuffing banned 18.

These counts are a floor, not a ceiling. A rule counts only if the vendor states it on a page an applicant reads before joining. Many programs keep their full rules in a platform agreement on PartnerStack or Impact, and a program with no published rule is not a program without rules.

Can SaaS affiliates run paid ads?

Usually yes, but rarely on the brand name. 53 programs ban bidding on their brand keywords and allow other ads, 20 ban or require approval for all paid search, and 18 ban every paid channel, social ads included. Together, 91 of 238 programs (38%) put a limit on paid advertising.

The brand ban protects the vendor from paying a commission on a customer who was already searching for it. The full bans go further. Cal.com's terms, effective January 13, 2026, rule out "Search engine ads (brand or non-brand)", "Social media or display ads" and sponsored posts. lemlist, Instantly, n8n and PhantomBuster publish similar blanket bans. Some vendors allow paid traffic only through the affiliate's own site: Proton requires PPC traffic to land on the affiliate's website first, and RoboForm says the same.

Programs on in-house tracking or FirstPromoter publish a paid ads rule most often (19 of 31 and 10 of 16), against 18 of 65 PartnerStack programs and 8 of 35 Impact programs. The platform programs still have rules; they sit in the network agreement rather than on the vendor's page.

Do you need an audience to join a SaaS affiliate program?

Most programs do not publish a number. Only 4 of 238 set a measurable audience minimum, while 41 say they review each application. Semrush asks for "a minimum of 1,000 unique visitors in monthly traffic", HeyGen is "open to creators with 5K+ followers on at least one platform" and Scala Hosting asks for an Ahrefs Domain Rating of 30 with 4K organic traffic, or a YouTube channel with 30K subscribers.

Review usually means fit rather than size. Semrush says it generally does not approve coupon, cashback, deals or generator websites. Surfer turns away off-topic audiences and applicants with no public presence, and FreshBooks says ad-only, social-only or email-only publishers are typically not approved. At the other end, 5 programs approve automatically, including systeme.io ("no application and no purchase required") and Mangools, where a free account opens the affiliate section.

15 programs require the affiliate to be a user first. Expandi asks for 14 days of active use before applying; Flodesk, ElevenLabs and Metricool require an account. 11 programs restrict who can join by country: QuickBooks takes U.S. partners only, with a U.S. EIN, address and bank account, and Reclaim lists approved regions.

What is the minimum payout for SaaS affiliates?

The median payout threshold is $50, across the 97 programs that publish one, and $100 is the most common single value (34 programs). 22 programs set $25 or less and 7 have no minimum at all, among them DreamHost ("No threshold"), SiteGround and Snov.io. 10 programs set the bar above $100.

The threshold can depend on the payment method. Cloudways pays by PayPal "once your monthly earnings reach $250", needs $100 for a transfer to a Cloudways account and $1,000 for a wire. 10 programs add a referral count to the amount: MailerLite pays once the balance reaches "$100 from at least 2 unique sales from 2 different referrals", and ActiveCampaign requires "at least two (2) Referrals within the prior twelve (12)-month period".

How long do SaaS affiliates wait to get paid?

159 programs pay monthly, 22 pay more often or on request and 4 pay quarterly; 53 do not publish a schedule. The real wait is the hold before a commission becomes payable, which covers the vendor's refund window. Among the 56 programs that publish one, the median is 45 days; 24 hold for 30 days or less and 9 for more than 60 days.

Platforms add their own cycle. On Impact, Semrush transactions lock 27 days after month end and are paid 21 days after the month they lock. The reference point also varies: some holds start at the sale, others at the end of the month, so two "30 days" can be weeks apart.

Which payment methods do SaaS affiliate programs use?

PayPal dominates: 114 of the 133 programs that name a payout method offer it (86%). 50 offer a bank transfer, wire or ACH, 32 pay through Stripe, 7 through Wise and 2 through Payoneer. 6 pay part or all of the commission as product credit, for example Dubsado subscription credit or SendPulse account credit.

Tax paperwork comes before the first payment. ClickFunnels says "Before You can be paid any Commissions, You must provide ClickFunnels a completed W-8 or W-9 tax form", and Kinsta, Writesonic and Benchmark Email publish the same requirement.

Which terms can cost affiliates their commission?

A small group of rules cancels or freezes money already earned. 9 programs can forfeit unpaid balances, 8 require the referred customer to stay 30 to 90 days, 10 require a minimum number of referrals and 8 set an activity quota to stay in the program. None is common, but each one changes what a commission is worth.

What should a SaaS company copy when it writes affiliate terms?

The rules most vendors agree on are the ones worth copying: ban brand bidding, self-referrals and coupon sites, require disclosure and hold commissions for the refund window. Few go further: only 4 programs publish an audience minimum and 9 a forfeiture rule.

Three practical points come out of the data:

  1. Publish the rules where affiliates apply. 43 programs show no rule on their program page and 53 no payout schedule. Affiliates compare programs before they apply, and missing terms read as risk.
  2. Match the hold to your refund policy. The median published hold is 45 days. A 97-day or 100-day wait is defensible for annual plans with long refund windows, but it should be stated up front, as DreamHost and HoneyBook do.
  3. Decide who you want before writing exclusions. Coupon and cashback bans (39 programs) and paid ads bans (91) filter out whole affiliate types. That is the right call if you want reviewers and educators, as our ideal partner profile template explains, and the wrong one if you plan to recruit media buyers.

How was this data collected?

Each program's rules were recorded from its official program page, terms, help center or official PartnerStack or Impact listing, never from a third-party blog, between September 30 and October 5, 2026. The 238 programs are every published affiliate program in the Scoutner directory on October 21, 2026, at 234 vendors.

  1. A program counts for a rule only if the rule is stated on one of those official pages. The figures are minimums.
  2. Paid ads rules are classed by the strictest rule published: brand keywords only, all paid search (banned or subject to approval), or all paid channels.
  3. Payout thresholds are the lowest published amount in USD or EUR. Hold periods are the number of days stated by the vendor, whatever the starting point (sale, purchase or end of month); a range counts at its upper value.
  4. On October 21, 2026, the terms quoted for Semrush, HeyGen, Scala Hosting, Flodesk, Looka, ClickFunnels, HighLevel, ActiveCampaign, Cloudways, Bench, DreamHost, HoneyBook, Cal.com and MailerLite were re-read on their pages. All were confirmed. MailerLite's terms page gives a different payout timing (within 45 days of eligibility) from its program page (every Friday), and both are shown above.
  5. Vendors were selected by US search demand for "[brand] affiliate program", so the sample leans toward well-known brands.
